After the opening of Pera Museum, a “research institute” was decided to be established similar to the one in Antalya, which was the main goal of Suna and İnan Kıraç Foundation. Consequently, a building 100 m away from the museum was chosen as a candidate. Rosolimo Apartment was built in the last quarter of the 19th century by the architect Gugliemo Semprini for renting purpose. As Tepebaşı converted from residence area to a commercial center in time, it began to be used as office for commercial activities. During this period important alterations were made especially at the ground floor. Some of its windows were joined and re-designed as display window.
According to the conditions of the time it was built, Rosolimo Apartment was masonry. The floor openings were made with bricks squezzed between “I profiles”. These “I profiles” at the walls looking at the facade and those at the floors were severely damaged due to the neglection of the building for a long time. The most difficult part of the job was to make the floors carry large amounts of books in each floor. In addition, the building had problems such as heating, cooling, air conditioning, wet spaces, fire escape and elevator. Therefore, the front and back parts of the building continued to be used with the same planning, while the central part was rebuilt in reinforced concrete starting from the basement in order to provide the necessary spaces. All the corroded floor profiles were ripped and placed with the new ones again.
The Rosolimo Apartment of the 19th century now gives service to the researchers with departments such as Byzantine, Ottoman and Republic Periods as Istanbul Research Institute. Small exhibitions take place at the ground floor. It has a library with books exceding 100.000.
